Loving and accepting yourself

is a recipe for inner joy and happiness.

You, yourself, as much as anybody else deserves your love and admiration.

Today, we live in a world where what people think of us seems to matter.

But you know what, I can tell you right away…..

Getting others to believe in you and admire your personality , starts with you believing in and admiring yourself.

How do you feel when you see your image in a mirror. A wide smile at your reflection is a great way to start, because confidence is everything.

If you a confident, you are beautiful!

In reality, it is tough to look beyond body image stereotypes as defined by the media, fashion industry, celebrities and the unreal world.

The Society we live in can push us to the extreme, tipping us off into dangerous eating habits and obsession such as anorexia and bulimia. These disorders are becoming even more prevalent among women, young ones and teenagers.

It is not uncommon to see parents engage in long arguments with their teen girls especially over food choices. Peers at school, social media and TV models influence the kids into thinking that being skinny is being healthy, and some become undernourished in a bid to attain the ‘perfect body shape image’.

Parents need to help our dear kids to realize that the goal should be healthy lifestyle, being fit and nourished. But what if you have an overweight child, then care should be taken to teach proper food choices and physical activity instead of ‘dieting’. Also, love and care not criticism, is required. Our goal is not to crush the child’s self esteem by constantly making unfair criticism, but to focus on grooming the child’s potentials and abilities.

Reasons why you should maintain a positive body image

1. Confidence

Negative body image is the reason why you have lost your self confidence. As kids and girls, we were confident and bold, we didn’t even know nor care about what others thought. But as we age, it seems that the confidence declines slowly until it is almost non-existent, because our lives begin to be remote controlled by external influences.

Lack of self confidence is the reason why you avoid taking pictures lately, you turn down several friends party invitations, you are withdrawn and sad. But really, all these are a function of our thoughts. Granted, there are people who tear us down intentionally or unintentionally with their words, however you can turn those stones people throw at you into Milestones.

You may have been criticizing yourself for years and it hasn’t worked.

Always Remember this: You are beautiful, you are wonderfully made, you have achieved a lot in your life and you are yet achieving! Numbers may describe your size, weight, height or shape, but they do not define You!

Write down your own positive body image affirmations and look yourself in the mirror first thing every morning and say it to yourself with a broad smile. You deserve even more!!!

You may want to say this to yourself right away:

I am beautiful. I am strong. I am enough. I am not a mistake.

I am starting on these healthy living activities today, because I love my body not because I hate it.

I do it for myself and not for anyone else.

This is my body, the only place I will always have to live in!

I am going to care for me as much as I care for you!

2. Improved Relationships

Relationships blossom when personal negative thoughts are replaced by positive ones. That is when the inner light in us shine through and we bring out our best.

Sally, a 23-year-old IT specialist, has tried her best to lose weight for 3 years now to no avail, for the past six months Jeff (whom she met on a flight from Johannesburg)has been going out with her and the relationship seem to be speeding, one of the evening at the local hotel in downtown New York, Jeff held her hands and uttered: ‘ I love you the way you are, your liveliness has enriched my lonely life’. Sally couldn’t believe her ears, but yes, she has lots of precious gems to unleash right from within her. But years of negative body criticism has held her back until someone else who was willing to look beyond the surface, dug it up and wasn’t willing to let her go. Their love has since flourished and knows no bounds. Of course, we don’t need to wait for someone to rediscover us, the ball is in our court…..kick it and you will be glad you did.

If you are experiencing persistent negative body image thoughts, you may want to see a mental health specialist, it is amazing how helpful they can be.

3. Reduced stress

The constant measuring of food, avoiding pleasurable meals with friends and family members, yo-yo dieting could be very stressful and take away the joy of living. Life is beautiful and should be enjoyed by you and me. Have fun now that we can! Ditch the stress of following diets and quick fixes, instead strive to understand yourself and identify areas of improvement. Work steadily at your goals, be realistic, be patient and kind to yourself. Make your goals fun, Stress in itself sabotages progress.

4. Great Mental Health

Negative body image is a major contributor of depression. Dissatisfaction with one’s body image leads to low self-esteem and gloominess. So counteract the negative feelings with positive outlook by taking stock of your personality as a whole and focusing on the many good things about yourself. Exercise, meaningful friendships, and cultivating good dietary habits have been found very helpful by many.

5. Weight Loss is not a Magic Pill

While achieving and maintaining a healthy weight is recommended, it does not follow that automatically weight loss produces positive body image.

All too often, we see individuals with negative body image thoughts about themselves, get obsessed about weight loss, actually lose weight and yet still struggle with depressing feelings about their appearance. Mental health experts have suggested that maintaining the right attitude while embarking on health and fitness goals are determinants of sustainable success.
